Spirituality, Stress, and Sleep

Discovering spirituality, or new depths of spirituality, can lead to more focus regarding your life’s purpose, enhanced personal relationships, and better skills when it comes to managing stress.  The four-part Sleep Away the Pounds Plan—good sleep habits, exercise, stress management, and a healthy diet will definitely help you manage stress more effectively. But your spiritual connection may be key to conquering the effects of stress.

What is spirituality?  Though spirituality may encompass religious beliefs and worship, it’s much more.  It’s about relationship—with self, others, and God (or you may say Higher Power).  For some, it is found in nature, sacred music, or community. For others, it takes the form of religious observances, worship, prayer, meditation, and Scripture reading.

How spirituality can help you. As you search for meaning in life, and its stressful, challenging events, spirituality can help you reframe how you view the events and restructure how you respond.

Spirituality can help you:

Discover meaning in life.  Clarify what matters most to you. You can eliminate stress by focusing less on the unimportant things.

Find your purpose in the world.  The more you come to know your purpose—the reason for which you were born—the more inner peace you’ll experience in difficult times.  In fact, it’s often the difficult times that propel us toward our purpose. Maybe you think you don't have a purpose. Perhaps you think the only reason you're here is because of an accident. You aren't here by accident. You're here because God wanted you to be here. He loves you. He created you. And He has a purpose for your life.

Let go of control.  When you feel connected, part of something greater than yourself, you can realize that you aren’t responsible for everything that happens in life.  When you let go of control, you can find more peace, discover creative answers, and glean wisdom from above. In fact, you’ll come to learn that many stressful events are actually teachers, helping you to grow spiritually.  Even events that appear to be tragedies can have positive outcomes.  You can share life’s burdens and joys with those around you and you can grow through tough times.

Transformation.  Many people have said that it’s the most difficult times in their lives that have transformed them the most.  Mother Theresa said, “I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.”  Maybe you wish He didn’t trust you with so much right now.  But we’re all entrusted with difficulties; the question is—will we grow through them?
